The right certificate, first time
Most delays we see come from ordering the wrong thing. Births, Deaths and Marriages can issue a certificate, which is the legal document, or a printout of the record, which is mainly for family history and is usually refused by embassies and overseas offices. We order the certificate unless you tell us otherwise.
- A printout ordered instead of the certificate
- A birth certificate that doesn't show a name change the visa office asked about
- One certificate ordered when two offices each want to keep an original
- A certificate sent overseas without the apostille or authentication it needed
- A visa office wanting a certificate issued in the last 6 or 12 months

Frequently asked questions
How do I order a New Zealand birth certificate?
For delivery in New Zealand, choose the certificate on this page and pay securely online, NZ$79 all in. You're then taken straight to a short online form to add the certificate details and sign our letter of authority, and we order the official certificate for you as an approved BDM Online organisation. Sending it overseas? Ask for a price first.
How much does a NZ certificate cost through you?
A birth, marriage or death certificate ordered and posted to a New Zealand address is from NZ$79 all in, including the certificate fee, our service, NZ postage and GST. Overseas delivery, apostilles, urgent service and multiple copies are quoted all in before you pay.
Are you part of the New Zealand Government?
No. NZ Document Assist Limited is an independent company and an approved BDM Online organisation. The certificate itself is the official certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Is the certificate official?
Yes. We order the official certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages. It is the same legal document, not a copy or a printout.
I live overseas. Can you send the certificate to me?
Yes. Many of our clients are overseas. We order the certificate and courier it to you, or to the embassy, lawyer or office that asked for it. International delivery is quoted for your country. See how we order NZ certificates from overseas.
Does it need an apostille?
If the certificate is going to an overseas government, court, bank or embassy, it usually does, or it needs authentication instead. Tell us the country and who asked for it and we'll confirm before you pay. For use in New Zealand, the certificate on its own is normally enough.
How long does it take?
Certificates posted within New Zealand usually arrive within one to two weeks. If an apostille is needed, allow about 3 weeks in total, or about 1 week with the urgent service where eligible. Tell us your deadline and we'll tell you straight away whether it's achievable.
Can I order a certificate for someone else?
Often, yes, for example for a child, a parent or an estate. Tell us your relationship to the person on the certificate. If anything extra is needed, we'll tell you before you pay.
What details do I need to order?
After paying, our online form asks for the full name on the certificate, the date and place of the birth, marriage or death, and for a birth certificate the parents' names, plus where to send it. It takes about 2 minutes. If you're unsure of a detail, give your best information and we'll check it with you.
