What is document authentication?
Authentication verifies the signature, stamp or seal on a document for overseas use. In NZ, DIA authenticates the document and MFAT verifies it. Some destinations also require an embassy step. We coordinate the services your document needs.

Which countries need authentication?
DIA lists the UAE, Thailand, Qatar and Malaysia under Category A. The required route depends on the destination and the receiving organisation’s instructions.

Does my document need a notary first?
It depends on the document. DIA accepts original NZ birth, marriage and death certificates directly. Documents such as powers of attorney require notarisation. JP certification does not replace a required notarial act. Notary assistance.
How long does authentication take?
Category A processing is normally within 15 working days. Eligible urgent applications are processed within 5 working days. Allow additional time for document preparation and courier delivery.
Category B has no set overall timeframe. Tell us your deadline before proceeding so we can check the expected timing for your destination.
Does my document need translating?
The receiving office determines the language and translation requirements. Share its instructions before we lodge your document. Applications requiring translation are ineligible for DIA’s urgent service. Translation assistance.
How much does authentication cost?
Our authentication service starts at NZ$205 including GST. Your quote confirms the government fees, delivery and any embassy charges for your destination.

Does the UAE need an apostille or authentication?
DIA lists the UAE under Category A authentication. Share the receiving office’s instructions so we can confirm any additional attestation steps and charges.
Can you help if I live overseas?
Yes. We can coordinate your NZ application and overseas delivery. You may need to send an original document, or we can order an NZ birth, marriage or death certificate where needed.
Can I apply directly to DIA?
Yes. You can prepare and submit your own application. Our service provides document checks, lodgement and coordination of the additional services agreed in your quote.
