What Does a Notary Public Do in New Zealand?
A New Zealand Notary Public is a lawyer authorised to perform specialised notarial acts.
Depending on the circumstances, a notary may:
- witness signatures on documents
- certify the authenticity of certain documents
- certify copies for overseas use
- collect sworn statements
- administer oaths
- perform other notarial acts intended for use overseas
The exact notarial act required depends on the document and the requirements of the organisation receiving it overseas.
Why Would I Need a Notary Public?
A notary is commonly required when a foreign authority, overseas lawyer, bank, company, property professional or other organisation needs additional formal verification of a New Zealand document or signature.
Powers of Attorney

Certified Copies
An overseas organisation may specifically require a copy to be certified by a Notary Public rather than another type of certifier.

Notary Public vs Justice of the Peace
A Justice of the Peace and a Notary Public are not interchangeable.

If the Department of Internal Affairs requires your document to be notarised, you must use a New Zealand Notary Public. DIA says a Justice of the Peace or ordinary solicitor certification will not satisfy that specific notarisation requirement.
What should I bring to the appointment?
We confirm the notary’s checklist before your appointment. This may include:
- Photo identification specified by the notary
- Original documents and any copies requested
- The receiving organisation’s instructions
- Any required supporting documents or translations
If your signature must be witnessed, wait for the notary’s instructions before signing.
Does notarisation include an apostille?

Does every apostille need a notary?
No. DIA accepts original NZ birth, marriage and death certificates directly. Other documents have different preparation requirements. Check apostille requirements before booking.
What if I need a translation?
Share the receiving office’s translation instructions before the appointment. We can coordinate the required language, certification and sequence with the providers. Translation assistance.

What If I Am Outside Auckland?
NZ Document Assist provides document coordination assistance throughout New Zealand.
If an in-person notarial act is required outside Auckland, the appointment itself needs to be handled with an appropriate independent Notary Public who can perform the required act.
We can still prepare you for the appointment and handle the apostille or authentication, translation and courier afterwards.
